Welcome to Phinny Studio, where clay meets creativity and tradition embraces innovation.

About the Studio

Phinny Studio is the creative space of ceramic artist Xu Zhao, where Eastern and Western ceramic traditions converge. Based in Massachusetts, the studio serves as both a working space and a bridge between the ancient pottery traditions of Jingdezhen, China, and contemporary American ceramic arts.

Artistic Journey

My ceramic practice began in 2022 and has evolved through intensive study with master instructors:

  • Wheel Throwing - Nine months of foundational training with Marc Mancuso at LEXarts, Lexington
  • Traditional Techniques - Immersive study in Jingdezhen, China’s “Porcelain Capital” (2023 & 2024)
  • Hand Building - Ongoing exploration with Judith Cooper at Munroe Center for Arts

This diverse training has shaped a unique artistic voice that honors traditional craftsmanship while embracing contemporary expression.

Current Focus

My work explores the tactile relationship between maker and material, finding beauty in both functional forms and sculptural expressions. Each piece carries the memory of its creation - from the centering of clay on the wheel to the alchemy of fire in the kiln.

Currently developing new series that blend:

  • Traditional porcelain techniques learned in Jingdezhen
  • Contemporary hand-building methods
  • Experimental glazing and surface treatments
  • Cross-cultural aesthetic influences
