Xu Zhao is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans visual arts and ceramics. Based in Massachusetts, Xu’s artistic journey reflects a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary expression.

Ceramic Arts Journey

Xu’s exploration of ceramic arts began in winter 2022, when a friend’s recommendation led to discovering LEXarts in Lexington. Under the guidance of Marc Mancuso, Xu spent nine transformative months mastering wheel throwing techniques across three intensive sessions.

The summer of 2023 marked a pivotal moment with a 15-day immersion in Jingdezhen, China – the historic “Porcelain Capital.” This experience connected Xu with centuries of ceramic tradition while exploring contemporary practices.

Since September 2023, Xu has been expanding into hand-building techniques at the Munroe Center for Arts with instructor Judith Cooper, adding sculptural dimensions to an evolving practice.

A return to Jingdezhen in summer 2024 for a focused 10-day workshop further deepened Xu’s connection to ceramic traditions and refined technical expertise.

Artistic Philosophy

“Clay connects us to the earth and to human history. Every piece carries the memory of its making – the pressure of hands, the rhythm of the wheel, the alchemy of fire.”

Xu’s work explores the intersection of functional beauty and artistic expression, drawing inspiration from both the meditative practices of traditional pottery and the innovative possibilities of contemporary ceramic art.

Current Practice

Currently based in Massachusetts, Xu continues to develop work that bridges cultures and traditions, creating pieces that speak to both the ancient heritage of ceramics and its vibrant future.
